A Nightmare on Elm Street Official Trailer #1 - (2010) HD
Genre: From the trailer you can tell that Nightmare on Elm Street is a horror due to the killer wielding a glove embedded with blades who kills people in their dreams, resulting in their actual death. It also shows the audience that it is a mystery as you wonder how he can appear in people's dreams and do some things not humanly possible.
Narrative: A guy called Krueger is being chased by an angry mob of people who burn the building that he is in. The trailer then skips to show some girls skiping and a woman talking about a strange man who appears in her dreams who is burnt symbolising to the audience that the man could be Krueger who may have survived the fire or died and is now out for revenge. It then shows the name of the street 'Elm Street' a voiceover of a song that is talking about Kreuger coming for you in your sleep is being played as its shows him sliding his hands on a pipe and people panicking about him killing them. It explains to the audience that people musn't fall asleep otherwise he will come for you it then leads on to a funeral and a little girl who has the markings of Freddie's blades sliced across her front. The next part of the trailer shows people worrying and trying to stay awake the screen goes dark and you see a boy looking round it then has a jump where Krueger attacks him, it then reveals people running away and a woman being possessed floating in mid- air suggesting he has powers to control many things. The last part of the trailer shows a woman trapped by him and Kreuger saying 'You have nothing to worry about this won't hurt one little bit'. It then shows you his face and his hand by her head she screams and the trailer ends with the intertitle 'Don't fall asleep'.
- Although the trailer reveals a lot it leaves some engima's for the audience such as.. Why were the people after him was it because he had already killed people and they knew it was him or had he done something to get them all angry? Also how does he create their deaths in reality is he the one who makes them die in real life or just their dreams?. How will the film end will he die?7
Target audience: The Target audience is 18+ due to the contents on the film however the trailer doesn't reveal the age of the audience but you assume that it is 18+ as it suggests that the deaths will be gruesome. Also because Krueger has blades and it's about people not being able to fall asleep in case he gets you and the song makes it not suitable for a younger audience as it could make them paranoid and not be able to sleep in case they think he will actually come for them.
Music: The music in the trailer is one of the main aspects as it makes the killer who he is because he has a unique song audience members associate him with it making him scarier. It is played at the perfect time when the audience see 'Elm Street' and then the music plays corresponding to what is happening in the trailer. Due to the music being slow, eery the trailer's slow pace action creates an immense atmposhere of tension and danger.
Shot types: The shot types on Krueger are either mid-shots or close ups especially on his hands when he slides them along something or is just about to kill someone. This is to highlight his main killing weapon and what makes him the most feared person when people look at him they are more aware of the blades then what he looks like. There is a long shot of him running at the beginning this shows him as a normal person and the audience are not sure whether to see him as a harmful killer or someone who is just being chased. As the trailer progresses the shots become more varied showing mid shots of people who are worried about sleeping, wide shot of the woman floating in the air showing the audience that it is only the man around and that Freddie is nowhere in sight.
Pace: The pace of the trailer is slow almost throughout the shots are not too far apart but they are kept on screen long enough to show some of the action rather than let the audience see a quick glimpse this is because they want the audience to see some people worrying and to see Freddie's hand with the blades but they don't want to give it all way by letting the audience see too much of his face and what he does.
Voice over: The voice over of the song helps create atmosphere and builds tension for the audience making them anticipate death, it is also catchy makig it rememberable for the audience and so they won't forget the film.

Horror KILLERS
Leatherface :
What makes him well loved: He might be a mentally retarded, slow moving, disfigured, in-bred hick, but put a chainsaw in his hands and he'll wipeout a van full of teenagers before the sun sets. There's no more frightening scene in horror than Leatherface's first appearance, in which he slam his victim on the head with his mallet, drags him into his meat locker, and slams the metal door closed.
Hannibal Lecter :
"I ate his liver with fava beans and a nice chianti."
What makes him well loved: He is brilliant, sadistic, and a complete mad man. Unlike many killers he is also a genius. He doesn't need to wield a chainsaw or a pickaxe. A deadly stare or the tone of his voice is enough to send shivers down your spine.
Freddie Krueger:
"One, two, Feddy's coming for you. Three, four, better lock the door."
What makes him well loved: You can stay out of the water or away from the woods, but you can't stop sleeping. That's what makes demon Freddy such a formidable killer. Freddy plagues the dreams of teens, and what happens in their dreams becomes realityu as the clawed-glove Freddy uses their deepest fears to torture and kill his victims.
The Possession trailer and poster
Analysis for trailer:
- Genre : The genre for The Possession is a horror you can tell this from the trailer through the use of music when she finds the box. It is slow and mysterious creating tension for the audience and the line 'Whoever made this didn't want anyone to open it', this intrigues the audience into wondering what will happen. This is where the horror begins to start as the trailer shows her becoming posssessed and accidents start to happen to other family members.
- Narrative: The narrative for the trailer is that a father picks up his two daughters from his ex wife's house and brings them to his place for the weekend. He takes them to a yard sale where she finds the box and he says that she can get anything she wants. They are both intrigued about the box and he tells her that 'Whoever made this didn't want anyone to open it'. However being a little girl and the box being so unique she opens the box little does she know what will happen soon after. You see her picking some items out of the box like a dead fly, a ring that she puts on her finger as young girls don't think anything bad will happen. The sister begins to notice that her younger sibling doesn't feel well, the next part of the trailer you see the dad talking to the mum asking if she has noticed anything weird with 'Emma' she says no. The father questions Emma about the box asking' Why it is so important to her' she replies 'I don't know'. You start to notice things like her anger at the table when the father says 'Slow down' she turns and stabs him in the hand with the fork. This is where the audience realise what the box is doing to her. The father takes the box to a professor who explains to him that a demon has possibly taken over his daughter it then shows the mother talking to Emma who smashes and screams. Emma suddenly realises that something has taken over her and she begins to worry asking 'Who am i'. A man tells her father that when the box is open people will die. She is taken to the doctors where an xray shows something living inside her, it then shows quick shots of her in pain and attacking others. The last thing you see in the trailer is a light in her throat where you see two fingers appear as if they are crawling up her throat.
- USP - The uniqe selling point is that it is based on a true story this intrigues the audience into watching it and makes it more realistic and scary. A horror is all about making people anticipate what will happen and when, however when people know it's a true story it begins to make them panic earlier and more vulnerable to jump. Having a young female girl as the main role adds more drama to the film as people don't like seeing little vulnerable girls being the dangerous character but it makes it more scary.
- Target audience: The target audience for this film is horror fans and teenagers 15+ this is because there are many jumps and as it is based on a true story the film is more scary and will make people think twice about certain things. The trailer doesn't show it as a 15 however with the contents shown such as her stabbing him with a fork and people dieing it is easy to know that it is not suitable for a younger audience.
- Music: The music is suitable for the trailer as it is screechy and edgy making people anticipate the dangers that await the little girl. It is played at the right points when you know that soemthing is going to happen but it's how long the music keeps you on the edge of your seat for before you actually see the incident or jump. The music is key in a horror as it is used a main way to attract an audience if the music was silly and didn't relate to the film then people would not take notice and would think that the film will be ruined by the music wrecking the main action.
- Shot types: There are a lot of close-ups and mid-shots of the young girl when seh finds the box and when she puts the ring on which holds the ancient spirit. These shots were used to show the audience in more detail what the box looks like and what she has used making them aware of what the box contains. When there is fast action the shots vary between long shots and mid shots as it creates more tension as you can't see her face very well but the audience as left to anticipate the rage on her face towards other people. When she opens the box the camera is zoomed in on her hand pulling the handle to open it making the clicking sound getting the audience intrigued making them think that as soon as she opens the box something will happen.
About the poster:
- USP - The unique selling point in the poster is that it is based on a true story attracting the audience to watch the film as they know that the plot has unique qualities using true facts.
- Background colour - The background colour for the poster is grey usually represents intelligence, maturity and sadness, however in the poster it juxtaposes these representations and creates a sense of despair, coldness and eeary atmposhere. The other colours in the poster are baige for the sking tone of the girl and a darker brown to symoblise the wrinkled and old hand coming out of her mouth. The colour green used for her top does not stand out which makes the hand the main aspect of the poster that catches the audiences attention.
- Main character - You see the face of the character with the hand coming out the mouth but the audience are aware that it is a girl by the hair style and face. This shows the audience that she has been taken over by something possibly a demon or curse. The title links with the picture showing that she has been possessed this gives the audience a hint at what happens during the film but it leaves the enigma of what else happens and if anyone else gets affected.
- Title of the film - The Possession is at the bottom of the poster in the centre which draws the audience to look at it. However for me i think the title is too small and that it should stand out more compared to other features in the poster by making it bigger it would attract the attention of the audience faster. Although the font does stand out in it's own way through the use of the font choice as it represents a horror feel and the use of the white colour makes it stand out as it is used in front of dark colours as the bottom half left side is black and the right has the green top of the character.
- Release date: The release date for the film is right at the bottom of the poster as it is not meant to be used as a stand out feature it is there to give the audience knowledge of when it comes out. The audience don't look at the poster and immediately want to know the release date they look at the main character, the title and they look for a unique selling point. The release date just adds to the poster allowing the audience understanding of how long they have to wait before they can see it making them build with excitement and anticipation as they want to watch it sooner.
- Tagline- The tagline in this poster is used to attract the audience and give them an indication of what might be included in the film. The tagline ' Darkness lives inside' corresponds with the picture of the hand in the mouth, this hints to the audience that she may have had something evil living inside her all along and something has awoken what was laying dorment for years. It also adds danger for the audience as they link the USP 'Based on a true story' to the events that might happen. This could make them feel scared as they know it is a true story and they wonder whether it could happen to them at some point in life. However this aspect makes the audience want to see the film as they anticipate a huge plot line and lots of jumps and danger.
- Producer of the film - The producer of the film is in a small font above the title it is written smaller as it does not want to take the focus away from the title. It is there to give the audience information about who produced the film. Sam Raimi is the producer of the possession and the audience associate him with other horror movies such as ' Within the woods' and 'Evil Dead 2' which did better at the box office then his original 'The Evil Dead'. He is also well known for his other films that are not horror genres such as 'Spiderman' the fans were not disappointed, it was a runaway success at the box office. Raimi returned for the sequel, 'Spiderman 2' (2004), which surpassed the original in box-office takings. By having the producer on the poster although it is a similar size to the release date the audience still see it and because of his success they relate him with an excellent film that will not dissapoint there expectations. This attracts them to go see it as they know that his other horrors were popular and this one should be even better especially with the special effeect on the poster with the hand coming out of her mouth.

How to analyse a movie poster
- Posters have a main purpose which is to advertise the product such as a film, however it has artistic values that make the poster stand out therefore attracting the target audience.
when you analyse a poster there are certain questions that you need to consider before looking at specific details.
~ What are the colours in the poster/what could they represent.
~ Who are the figures in the poster/ do you think the characters are suitable and relate to the film.
~Are there any symbols in the poster if so what could they represent.
~ Does the title of the film stand out.
~Are there any clues that could hint to the audience something about the plot.
~Who do you think the poster is aimed at.
~Which genre is portrayed in the poster and does it follow any conventions used for that genre.
~ What is the unique selling point in the poster (E.g the use of stars)
~How is the attention gained in the poster are the audience hooked by the characters, stars, humour or shock.
~ What effect does the tagline have if it has one.
The poster can also give you important information about the production context of the movie:
- Who has created the film - are they a big institution
- How important a part of the whole marketing campaign is the poster.
- Do you think it's a good poster, state why.
- Does it communicate effectively with the audience?
- Is the poster offensive in any way or is suitable for the target audience.

The Ugly Truth poster
The poster for the Ugly Truth shows the two main characters, it reveals to the audience that they are also well known stars 'Katherine Heigl' and 'Gerard Butler', this immedietly attracts audience members as they love these stars in other movies and associate them as brilliant actors. The black line going down the middle of the poster splitting them apart shows that this is about the differences about how men and woman behave and what they think about. Hvaing the woman on the left holding her heart in her hand by her head shows the audience that she is soft and into romance. Her smile shows that her character is lovely and friendly all about knowledge and closeness. Whears having the man on the right holding his heart lower down on his body reveals that his character is more about having a good time and isn't worried about committment. His sly smile gives the impression that his character is cheeky and will add humour to the film. The title appears near the bottom of the poster but is clearly visible so that the audience can see it, it is in black font to match the rest of the poster as the two main colours are black and red. The colour Red is an emotionally intense colour representing love, passion and strength which is a key part in the poster as it gives the audience a indication as to what the two main people will experience. The colour black represents mystery and the unknown which juztaposes the colour Red however it leaves an enigma for the audience as they anticipate the unknown between the two people how will they meet, what will happen in the film.
The Next Karate Kid (1994) Film Trailer
The Next Karate Kid trailer shows the female lead practicing with her teacher, the intertitles appear on screen telling the audience the key skills you need for karate. They appear on screen and then the trailer shows a quick clip of her doing that skill. It is different to the other karate kids as it is about a girl who wants to learn karate this is the unique selling point for the trailer, however the trailer doesn't show the audience much of the plot as it is mainly about the skills you need, the only bits that explain the plot are right at the end when she kicks a man and then she performs a move and some barrels explode for me this is a bad trailer.
It leaves too many enigma's for the audience as it is confusing to know what is actually going on. It doesn't show any other characters apart from two guys who you see briefly and it doesn't show you how they all meet and what significance they have to the story line. The barrels exploding at the end only show the audience that a fight scene happens, but they already expect a fight scene from the title Karate Kid. The genre of the film is revealed through the use of the intertitles and the explosion at the end, it shows the audience that it is an action, however the traier does not play to the strengths of it being an action it should show more fighting between the girl and other people rather than explaining some techniques you need to perform moves. The camera shots are mainly mid-shots and close-ups of the girl this is to show all her moves she has learnt and her in training encouraging the audience to watch the film as it has action in it.
Romance genre
- Conventions of a romance genre and what we expect to see in a trailer for that genre :
- The trailer has to make an attempt to make it's self unique from other trailers of the same genre, for example they could include different characters to other films or specific actors that haven't been in a romance genre before.
- We expect to see the female and male lead and a quick preview of how they met.
- a situation will occur that will test their relationship, the audience won't see the end result but will expect the couple to break up but eventually resolve the situation.
- A family member will cause problems usually a mother or father who want the best for their child.
- The trailer needs to show the audience the story line and should leave some enigma's for the audience too anticipate what happens so that they don't already know the whole plot just from watching the trailer.
- We expect to see part of their love story like them going on a date or walking down a street holding hands, a romantic atmposhere created for the audience.
- Three trailers i have chosen from the genre to look at:
Titanic trailer 1997
The Holiday
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch? feature=player_embedded&v=S3G3fILPQAU The Notebook
- Titanic trailer: In this trailer you see the two main characters and the life that they both have which are very different. The female lead being upper class and you see a guy giving putting a necklace on her but the close- up shot of her face reveals to the audience that she is not happy in the relationship. The male lead is of a lower class and prefers to have a laugh, although he has a romantic, soft side to him that attracts her. They meet on the boat he spots her for the first time and his friend tries to tell him that he has no chance with her. They properly meet when she tries to make a suicide attempt by jumping off the boat due to her being unhappy, although he convinces her not to jump. The next part of the trailer shows them having fun together dancing, however that is then destroyed by her fiance threatening jack and getting annoyed with her. Jack tells her that she needs to leave her fiance otherwise she will die. It then shows a close-up on a crew member looking worried there is a split second between the crew member and the iceberg being revealed, the audience are left to anticipate how badly the boat will be damaged however that is revealed throughout the rest of the trailer. The next shot is a close-up of jack and Rose kissing unaware of the iceberg until it has hit the boat and parts of it land on the ship. Their is a mid-shot of the boat hitting the iceberg underwater and you can see some of the damage to the boat. The rest of the trailer shows people desperately trying to get off the boat and people attempting to remain calm as part of the boat starts to sink.
- The Holiday is completely different to Titanic as it is about four people that fall in love. The trailer shows a woman who is in love with a guy who is about to get married, it then shows another woman breaking up with a guy who slept with someone else. They both have the same idea which is to get away over christmas vacation as they don't want anything to do with men, little do they know that will change. The two female leads talk online and decide to do a house exchange where they go to the other persons house for two weeks. As the trailer goes on it shows the two woman getting to there new location and getting used to the surroundings. It shows a mid-shot of the woman opening the door and then a mid-shot of a guy standing there, the audience are left to wonder if they will get together. It then shows the other woman sitting on a sofa with a guy creating the sense of romance between them and that they have already got to know one another. It then progresses and the next main part of the trailer is when she says 'I'm leaving in nine days, and this makes it complicated' this leaves an enigma for the audience as they don't know what will happen next will they stay together when she leaves. It shows the other two characters laughing at a house and drinking showing they enjoy each others company. It then shows the same characters eating at a restaurant laughing this creates a romantic atmposhere and the audience assume they are together.
Titanic is a tragic love story, it has all the elements that we would expect to see in the trailer. It shows how the two main characters meet, a family member trying to wreck the relationship in this case the fiance. The situation of the ship hitting the iceberg and is slowly sinking will test there relationship and also the fiance tests how strong she feels for Jack as to whether she will leave her fiance. The trailer shows the story line and also leaves enigma's for the audience as they have to try and figure out who will survive and if any of the main characters will die.
- The Notebook is a romance genre, this shown through the use of the two main charcaters and the love they share. The trailer shows the male and female lead meeting at a carnival where he persuades her to go out with him, it continues showing them having a laugh together and the romance begins to spark. However the common convention of a romance genre is to have a family member intervene and split them up. The trailer shows a mid-shot of the woman leaning over a desk telling a guy ' It has got to stop' it then quickly shows another mid-shot of the man walking towards the camera and the woman in the background leaving the house running after him. It then goes to a two-shot of the mother and the daughter having a conversation, the mother says 'You are not to see him and that's final'. This reveals to the audience that they will split up and some other guy is going to enter her life that the mother approves of. Another convention is that the trailer leaves an engima not showing the audience how the couple's relationship ends, the trailer reveals the other man and how she is about to get married to him but then the first guy appears after 7 years wondering what is going on. The audience are left to wonder who she will pick and what will happen to the mother as part of the plot is revealed that the mother never gave her the letters that the guy was sending to her over the years. The music creates the romantic atmposhere as it is soft and gentle it corresponds to the trailer as it shows the couple on a boat and them dancing together, showing the audience the love they share.
"DEAD MAN'S SHOES" TRAILER
The music at the beginning of the trailer corresponds to the message being sent to the audience about the brothers bond, showing that they care for each other and would hate to see the other one get hurt. During the trailer you see a group of guys attacking one of the brothers and then suddenly the music changes to a deeper tone and a slower pace showing the audience that the tension is building as they anticipate what the other brother is going to do to the group of people.
The genre of the trailer is revealed through the use of costume as the person in the mask, who is killing people creates the thriller atmosphere for the audience as they wonder if it is the brother in the mask. The lighting that appears when the mask villian is on screen is dull and the use of flashing images suggests it is a crime as most crime genres use the convention of low light and an urban setting for the film.
The use of intertitles at the beginning of the trailer stand out because of the font size this clearly makes the audience aware of the instituition creating the film. The rest of the intertitles in the film reveal little clues that hint the plot 'A brother's love' is used to show the audience that it is about two brother's and that something will test the strength of the bond.
