Poster analysis of THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

  •  The colour choice for the poster is a light grey with more of a white shade at the bottom, this choice in colours adds to the atmpsohere that the poster is trying to create. The light grey symbolises a msytery along with the image of the cabin that is floating in the middle of the woods leaving the audience wondering what is inside. The white at the bottom makes the title stand out but it is also used as a negative space making the cabin more isolated and centre of attention.
  • The cabin is in the centre of the poster making it attractive to audience members, however the image is simple so it does not give too much away leaving enigma's. The idea that the cabin is in mid-air is intriguing enough, although the architecture has been manipulated making people look even closer at the image as they want to find out what's going on.
  • The release date is at the bottom of the poster which is a cliche for almost every poster there is. It is used to give information about the film and when people can go see it in cinema. It came out in April which is normally a month where not many films are released this could of intrigued audience members as the film would not of had a lot of competetion. It was released on the 13th which people associate that number with horror, therefore it builds up the tension of a horror aspect.
  • The title is near the bottom of the poster this allows the audience to look at the cabin in the middle and then their eyes focus on what the film is called. I think that the title doesn't take away from the main image which is a good effect however most people associate the title to be the stand out feature.
  • The tagline 'You think you know the story' intrigues the audience into thinking that there will be a twist somewhere in the plot line that will change an event. It also makes the audience want to watch the film as they anticipate a twist and therefore it could be the little things that catch them out. However the tagline could also mean that nothing is ever what it seems, some things look weird but they hold the darkest secrets.
  • The prodcution company and director are below the title in a smaller font as they don't want it to take away from the main aspects of the colours, the image, the tagline and title of the film. It is still an aspect that should be included on a poster but it is there for an information basis. This is due to people wanting to know what institution was involved in this case 'Lionsgate' who bring lots of big horror films to cinema's, this intrigues the audience to watch the film as they know that it will be a success. The director is also included as an aspect that could make the audience want to see the film, 'Drew Goddard' is the director of this film although this is not a familiar horror director as he mainly does television programmes with the occassional film.
